Serum Institute of India has been issued noticed by the court against the use of ‘COVI SHIELD’ name for their vaccine.

A notice has been issued by a civil court in Maharashtra to the Serum Institute of India (SII) in a suit filed by cutis biotech, a pharmaceutical company, the company seeks restrain of the use of “COVI SHIELD” or “COVID SHIELD” name.
The plaintiff states that the above-mentioned names belong to their company and they are the lawful user as they applied for the tradename “COVI SHIELD” prior to SII who are using “COVID SHIELD” which is similar to their tradename.
The company has also accused businessperson, Mr. Bandaru Srinivas for the same.
The plaintiff states that due to the SII using that name, their company is facing loss because of confusion among people. Therefore, the plaintiff seeks that use of “COVI SHIELD” or “COVID SHIELD” or any such name should be restrained of use and its rights to use should remain to cutis biotech.
